I tried to quit smoking this summer. I kept the empty packs of nicotine gum with the stuff I had already chewed as trophies. The chewed gum holding record of my mouth, of the action, of the day like a fucked up advent calendar. Each piece of gum in its own little segment of the clear plastic and foil package looks like an embryo.
Below the calendar the body that might contain the gum cells stretches itself over a new folding chair. Sanitary, white, shrivelled. The object’s wrinkled, diaphanous plastic-wrap looks like my lung tissue (embodying what Gabriel will identify as the industrial abject). Popped gum bubble like elderly skin. This is a living room scene, but also one in a hospital.
